 In some places, I have seen this recipe being eaten with Pongal, for that we need to prepare thick gravy type. I have seen people using masala powder specially designed for this recipe.

Whatever it is I didn’t want to mess you and make this recipe complicated. So I kept it simple and tasty. For your reference, I have added how to make masala powder at the end of the recipe.

Ingredients

  • Eggplant - 1 medium size
  • Onions - 2 medium sized, chopped
  • Tamarind paste - 1/2 tbsp.
  • Green chilies - 6 sliced to pieces
  • Ripe Tomatoes - 2 diced
  • Mustard seeds - 1 tbsp.
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 tbsp.
  • Curry leaves - 1 tbsp.
  • Mustard seeds - 1 tbsp.
  • Oil - 4 tbsp.
  • Water - 1 1/2 cups
  • Coriander leaves - 1 tbsp.
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

How to Make Brinjal Gothsu Recipe:

  1. Cut eggplant into small pieces and keep aside
  2. Heat oil and add mustard seeds, once they start spluttering add curry leaves, chilies and onions
  3. Saute till onions turn transparent.
  4. Add tomatoes and eggplant, saute further for 5 minutes
  5. Add tamarind paste, turmeric powder, salt and water.
  6. Cook further on low flame so that eggplants turn soft.
  7. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot.
  8. Gotsu recipe goes well with plain rice and chapattis.

I suggest you make Kathirikai Gothsu masala powder first and then go to the main recipe. When it comes to South India, this recipe is used in almost all restaurants.


Preparation of Kathirikai Gothsu Masala powder:

Ingredients

  • Chana dal – 5 tbsp.
  • Urad dal – 2 tbsp.
  • Whole black peppercorns – 1 tbsp.
  • Coriander seeds – 5 tbsp.
  • Cumin seeds jeera – ½ tbsp.
  • Dry Red chilies – 3 no.
  • Sesame seeds – ½ tbsp.
  • Oil – 1 tbsp.

Instructions

  1. dd 1 tbsp. Oil on a pan and add all spices.
  2. Roast till you get golden brown color.
  3. Cool and grind it to powder.
